Mexican shoppe – a wonderful shopping experience

Mexican food is slowly becoming a favorite of mine because it reminds me so much of my Kenyan heritage and food my mama cooks. Take the tortillas, they are similar to chapati, the beans, well beans are just that, beans. They come as black beans, red beans, black eyed peas… oops, is that Mexican..???  Salsa is similar to  kachumbari..mmmmh mmmmh good.

The reason I went to this supermarket was to see if they had mangoes and avocados; real ones- I mean mangoes and avocados that are  juicy and delicious when soft – meaning ripe!  I was not disappointed. Not only did I find my fruit, but I also found juice, juice and more juice…

Check this out:

64 0z/2 quart carton of  mango juice, horchata, (a rice and cinnamon drink) and a never before seen coconut pineapple nectar drink. For snacks I could not resist the coconut, strawberry muffin like cake, a chocolate chip cookie, (twice as big as a cellphone) and very moist delicacy full of raisins:- which I ate on the spot.

If ever you are by La Michoacana on SW 29th and Western, step in and marvel at all the wonders from Mexico. This store is packed with goodies. Pick something from the grocery area, the butchery area, the bakery and don’t forget the cafe. You can get freshly cooked  meats aka beef or chicken for only $3.00/lb or a plate for $4.99.  Let me not spoil it for you. You need to visit  to believe it.

While we had gone in for mangoes, avocados and other fruit, we ended up buying marinated chicken, beef  and taco meat, tortillas, chili sauce.  We stocked up our kitchen real good and won’t need to be shopping for a while now!

A fabulous treat for fabulous ladies!

Inspirations Tea Room

For the first ever Fabulous Ladies meet, we decided to go to the one of a kind tea room in Oklahoma; Inspirations Tea Room. It was fabulous from the get go! We walked into a little paradise that only one of us had visited before. It looked like a mysterious castle. Ceilings  over 12ft high, beautiful serenading tea rooms, grand rooms with fireplaces, sun rooms, gazebos, lovely tea settings, filled with  friends and families who had gathered to  share happiness and joy. The motto engraved at the entrance is  “encouraging, faith, family and friends”.

Outside, was a splendid garden and beautiful view.  As we sat in the sun room we took in the beauty of the great outdoors. An appetizer plate of scones and lemon curd was already set.   We got our choice of tea from the menu. I had the Bangkok tea – green tea flavored with coconut, lemongrass and ginger. Lunch was served with a selection of sandwiches, salad and tomato-basil soup.  Dessert was your choice of coconut cake, chocolate cake, or peach cobbler. As we ate lunch, and talked, we couldn’t help but feel special.

This place is truly precious.  Make sure to dress up and wear a hat if you can.  It really will take you to another time period.  Don’t be surprised if, all of a sudden you start feeling like a princess, and all the people around you are part of your grand kingdom, there at your beck and call!

Grilled Corn: Summer time treat!

Maize, Corn…… whatever!  This is a treat I remember from visiting my grandparents who grew maize, beans, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, coffee, tea  among other things for their livelihood. My grannies would pick fresh corn from their farms,  bring it in, clean it up and put it by the fire to grill it. It was a fabulous treat!

I recently introduced grilled corn to my hubby who never imagined eating grilled maize (what I called it) or grilled corn (what he called it). He said they had plenty in Iowa, close to where he grew up and yet he had never had corn, grilled. Amazing.

Anyway, who thought that grilled corn would be so delicious?

We decided to grill some corn while grilling chicken and….oh my goodness! What a surprise!

Preparation is easy.  Clean corn by removing husks and silks, wash with water and pat dry

As you grill your chicken or burgers, place corn on the sides of  grill so that they cook on low heat. Turn the corn occasionally. When slightly browned, remove and place on dish.  Spread some butter add salt and pepper ( optional) and enjoy!

So now,  when you see the corn selling for 3 for a buck, grab some and give your family a treat. You won’t regret it!

Simply scrumplicious! 15/10
